MUMI RtDUET Downtime Reporting

- Mining
Project Overview
Mipac were requested to implement RtDuet for MUMI to 10 machine centres, with the possibility of expanding the scope of RtDuet in the future in order to improve their reporting of production and operations.
Background
Mutanda Mining is a copper and cobalt mine and metallurgical plant located in the Congo. The site is owned by Glencore and they wanted to improve their reporting of production and operations.
First, they implemented the AVEVA PI historian and then MUMI visited their sister site, Kamoto Copper Company (KCC), to learn what systems they were using. Mipac had implemented RtDuet for KCC and so they recommended it to MUMI, who contacted Mipac and started discussions and demonstrations to get a project going.
Project Scope
Mipac facilitated remote workshops to define the configuration for RtDuet, including:
- Machine centres
- Event triggers
- Time usage model
- Reason Tree
Mipac configured 10 machine centres for MUMI, with the potential to increase this number in the future by easily expanding the RtDuet license.
Mipac also worked with other Glencore personnel to implement their new global standard Time Usage Model and Reason Tree. This Time Usage Model took learnings from Glencore operations around the world and applied them in a standard simplified manner. Mipac took this information and used it to build out the configuration for RtDuet.
Mipac provided training for the MUMI project team, in a “train the trainer” method, so that the MUMI individuals would be able to train their operations team in how to use RtDuet.
Project Challenges
The project team encountered a number of challenges over the course of the project. These included:
- MUMI wanted to improve their production and have better reporting and visibility of their operating data. The plant at MUMI has a lot of areas and equipment, so the team from MUMI wanted to be able to increase the number of assets being tracked in phases.
- Glencore had a global standard for their Time Usage Model for downtime tracking which Mipac had implemented before at KCC. For MUMI however, Glencore was launching a new global standard that they had developed in their South American operations. Glencore wanted the MUMI RtDuet to make use of this new Time Usage Model and Reason Tree that will soon be instituted at all their sites.
Results
Mipac implemented RtDuet for MUMI for 10 machine centres, with the possibility of expanding the scope of RtDuet in the future. RtDuet provided them with downtime capture for their critical equipment and standardise their KPIs and reporting across Glencore’s sites.
Unique aspects of this project
Mipac took the Time Usage Model developed by Glencore and built that in the RtDuet context, configuring the:
- Time Usage Model
- Time Usage Codes
- Reason Tree
In this global standard from Glencore, every reason is mapped to a particular part of the Time Usage Model, so Mipac was able to configure RtDuet to automatically select the Time Usage Code based on whichever Reason was selected as the cause of each downtime event. This simplifies the use of RtDuet for the operations team and ensures greater standardisation and fewer errors in the RtDuet downtime data.
