Mipac will provide main automation contracting for what is set to be one of Australia’s largest, lowest cost and lowest emissions copper nickel projects – BHPs’ West Musgrave Project – as announced last month.
The awarding of this contract is testament to Mipac’s extensive experience and mineral processing expertise, and will span two years.
As the Main Automation Contractor (MAC), Mipac will be responsible for delivering a complete and operating integrated process control system (PCS) for the West Musgrave Project, which will monitor, control, ensure plant and asset safety, manage plant operations and achieve business objectives.
Mipac’s Managing Director, Eddie De Rivera, says it is a tribute to Mipac’s strong reputation in the industry:
“The West Musgrave Project is a greenfield operation with a focus on the future. Through its digital roadmap, it aims to become an integrated, connected and optimised mine with connected workers. At Mipac, we are excited to be part of this project and look forward to applying our 26 years of industry experience and passion for innovation to make a real difference on this project.”

Mipac’s main automation contracting work will focus on implementing technology best practice to ensure a flexible and scalable architecture that will allow BHP [formerly OZ Minerals] to adapt quickly to new technologies (future proof).
Once completed, the site will have fully integrated operational processes and systems, enabling more efficient and dynamic energy management as well as integrated operations, reducing its green footprint as well as the requirement for personnel to be on site.
The West Musgrave process control system will utilise physical and virtual networks to create always-on communication links and integration of all major vendor packages and leading PLC/SCADA technologies to ensure the site is future-oriented and optimised.
The scope of main engineering contracting for the project will span the delivery, design and configuration of a fit-for-purpose control system for the West Musgrave Minerals Processing Plant, project management, engineering and design, PCS hardware and infrastructure, PCS software, data historian and configuration, testing and commissioning, delivery and site installation and documentation.
Deliverables will include project management, engineering drawings, specifications, risk assessments and engineering reports, test procedures, check sheets and PCS configuration files.
Mipac expects the work to take 2 years and engage up to 16 staff.
